  • This course was developed for persons who are already operating an income generating activity or those interested in starting their own businesses. The course modules and activities are centered on three (3) key aspects of entrepreneurship: 1) the individual, their traits, skills, and attributes that make entrepreneurs successful, 2) the business ideas, how to generate/brainstorm them, where to look for them, how to expand them, and 3) how to validate business ideas to ensure its able to meet potential profit goals. These core elements will assist any current or future entrepreneur develop and grow a business now or in the future.  

     Course Duration:   1.5 hours   

    Course Objectives: 

    1. Understand the concept of Entrepreneurship  

    1. Identify traits skills and drive necessary to be a successful entrepreneur  

    1. Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in line with profiles of successful business owners 

    1. Undertake exercise to cement the process of generating, validating and executing an idea.   

    Learning Outcome(s): By the end of the session participants will be able to;  

    1. Discuss current entrepreneurs and their contribution to their community and Jamaica on a whole 

    1. Assess personal characteristics against that of successful entrepreneurs  

    1. Identify and assess sources of support for small businesses and entrepreneurs 




    • In Module 1 of the Introduction to Entrepreneurship course, students will explore the varying definitions (scholarly and non-scholarly) of Entrepreneurship and the factors that may lead to the genesis of most entrepreneurial activities. 

      This module will prompt students to think about some of the common traits that exist in most successful entrepreneurs using entrepreneurial figures they may know or know of. Additionally, students will also get the opportunity to learn the differences between an Entrepreneur and a Small Business Owner.

      Activities include an entrepreneurial quiz and homework!

       

       



    • In Module 2 of the Introduction to Entrepreneurship course, students will learn how Entrepreneurs gain and attain world class standards of business operation. Some of these standards include being legally compliant in business and in your respective countries as well as managing the implication of taxes that any business will attract.

      Students will also look at the pivotal role record keeping and the adaptation to the ICT advancements will have on any business.

      Lastly, the SWOT analysis will be explored in an effort to help the students understand how Entrepreneurs can align their business mission and goals based on the entity’s Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threats.



    • In Module 3 of the Introduction to Entrepreneurship course, students will look at the difference between and entrepreneurial venture and a social enterprise.

      After gaining insights on the social enterprise, including definitions and examples, students will then learn how this difference from a charity organization.
